Simplex ratchet jacks provide mechanical lifting through the ratchet mechanism specified for each model. Compare steel and aluminum-housing listings by rated load and travel.
Check contact position and operating clearance
Review the permitted load at the intended lifting point, minimum height and available stroke. Allow space for the operating handle and confirm any orientation limitations in the instructions.
Ratchet travel and loading arrangements differ by model; choose from the published dimensions rather than capacity alone. For threaded mechanical actuation, browse screw jacks.
Choose around the mechanical operating envelope
Ratchet jacks use a handle-driven mechanism, so the space for the handle and the specified reversing or lowering operation matters. Check the available stroke together with the allowed load direction and contact arrangement. “Mechanical” describes the drive method; it does not approve every holding or lifting use.
Before procurement, record:
- The actual lifting or positioning point and required movement.
- The model's allowed head or toe loading, where applicable.
- Space for the full handle movement and access to the controls.
- The specified operating orientation and the condition of the supporting surface.
Steel and aluminum models need a specification comparison
Housing material can influence carrying weight, but the model's load, stroke and operating limits remain the deciding information. For field crews moving between locations, compare the complete jack weight and handling provisions rather than assuming every mechanical jack has the same portability.
RJA1022 provides an aluminum-housing reference; RJ84A provides a steel ratchet-jack reference. Their current listings should be reviewed individually for the actual working dimensions.
Can I add a longer handle to reduce effort?
Use the manufacturer's specified handle. An extension can exceed the intended input or component loads and is not an approved way to change the jack's performance.
Is a ratchet jack the same as a screw jack?
No. They use different mechanical arrangements and operating procedures. Compare screw jacks if screw actuation is the purchasing requirement.
What should be inspected before returning an old jack to service?
Use its inspection and maintenance instructions, including the mechanism, contact points and structural condition. A jack that still moves is not thereby confirmed suitable for the rated load.
