Gate valves are selected for isolation duties within the limits specified by the manufacturer. Browse threaded and flanged industrial listings, including models identified with outside-screw-and-yoke stem arrangements.
Account for stem travel and access
Confirm the connection and class, then check installation dimensions and operating clearance. Review body, trim and sealing materials for the fluid and temperature. Gate valves should not be assumed suitable for throttling simply because they can be partly opened.
If the application calls for regulated flow, review the specified valve design and compare globe valves where appropriate.
Allow for the stem and handwheel at full operation
Measure overhead and side clearance with the valve in its fully operated positions. A rising stem or an outside-screw-and-yoke arrangement can require space that is easy to overlook when measuring only the body. Confirm access for the operator after insulation, neighboring pipework and supports are considered.
For a like-for-like plant replacement, record the complete construction and connection standard. The same nominal size and class can still conceal differences in trim, body material or installed dimensions.
Information worth putting on the purchase order
- Medium and operating temperature range.
- Required class or documented pressure-temperature rating.
- End connection and replacement dimensions.
- Body, trim and packing requirements.
- Stem arrangement and available operating clearance.
Can I leave a gate valve partly open to control flow?
Do not assume throttling service is permitted. Gate valves are generally selected for isolation; use the exact model's documented duty.
Does an OS&Y description establish the seat or trim material?
No. It describes a stem/yoke arrangement. Identify wetted trim and sealing materials separately.
What if the job needs regular flow adjustment?
Specify the regulation duty, flow and pressure drop first. Review globe valves or another expressly suitable control design rather than choosing an isolation valve solely because it can be partially opened.
The valve selection guide helps distinguish these functions before narrowing the material and connection.
